CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“He’s late,” Alex told the yellow tabby curled in the sunlit window seat of the dining niche.

She glanced at the pitcher of fresh iced tea that she’d made and the box of cupcakes she’d bought from grocery bakery. They were Josh’s favorite—chocolate-frosted devil’s food cake.

Alex picked one up, then put it back down, resisting the temptation to reduce the dozen treats to eleven. Instead, she checked the refrigerator to make sure there was enough ice. One with an icemaker was her next purchase.

“Oh, honestly,” she exclaimed, slamming the freezer door and giving Riley a start. “It’s not like this is a date,” she told the cat. “And what’s the point of impressing Josh anyway?” Instead of replying, Riley devoted his attention to something outside. Alex looked through the window over the back parking lot in time to see Josh’s black truck pull up.

“They’re here!”

Still love you…

Flying on three words that she might not have heard correctly, Alex rushed toward the steps that led from her apartment to the first floor. By the time she unlocked the double-wide cargo doors, Josh and two teen boys as tall as he stood there.

“So where do we start, boss?” Josh asked. His ratty, paint-stained tee shirt and jeans looked like he’d already worn them out, but what they did for his well-toned physique made up for it.

She forced herself to look at her prospective employees, remembering them from church. “I’m offering minimum wage for tonight,” she told them, “but if you two do a good job, I’ll give you a raise and more work, how’s that?”

The boys nodded eagerly, thrilled to be working at all, and followed Alex to the stepvan. In no time at all, they had it unloaded, except for the armoire, which Alex decided to take directly to the Turner property. The decision was practical, but it meant running her emotions through another wringer, as if they’d not been through enough of late.

Although just having Josh in her home while she served the iced tea and cupcakes had every feminine nerve she possessed screaming hunk alert. Even Riley, who was suspicious of men, became Josh’s best friend over a cupcake. The guy was born to charm.

As they headed toward the riverfront home. Kyle accompanied Josh in his pickup to the Turner place, while Brandon rode shotgun with Alex in the stepvan. The whole way over, Brandon chatted about their work at the community center. He idolized Ellen, but then what fifteen-year-old wouldn’t? She lived on a boat and rode a motorcycle. How cool was that?

Once they arrived, Alex used her key to open the front door. It would be easier to carry the armoire straight in and up the steps. As she stepped inside, the smell of fresh paint and polyurethane on the gorgeous hardwood floors assailed her. The fumes always threw Sue Ann into an allergy attack, but to Alex, it smelled like renewal…a fresh start.

Lynn’s fresh start, she reminded herself, following the men upstairs, breath lodged in her chest with every tilt and teeter of the large piece of furniture.
